Navantia: S-82 "Narciso Monturiol" launch ceremony held in Cartagena

Last week, we were honored to witness the launch of the S-82 "Narciso Monturiol" submarine at Navantia's facilities in Cartagena, a remarkable milestone for Navantia and the Spanish naval industry.

We would like to congratulate the Navy and Navantia, S.A., S.M.E. on this historic achievement, and thank them for inviting us and allowing us to share in this momentous occasion. We are proud to have contributed our engineering expertise to the development of the S-80 program, a project that combines technological innovation, precision, and industrial excellence. Juan Antonio García Solano, Managing Director, was in attendance, reaffirming our commitment to innovation and our contribution to the advancement of the naval industry.

Event highlights

  • This is the second submarine in the S-80 class, which is currently undergoing preparations for its port and sea trials.

  • The ceremony was presided over by Defense Minister Margarita Robles, who emphasized: “This marks the continuation of a path of success, hard work, progress, and a bright future to make our Navy, Cartagena, the Murcia region, and, above all, Spain great.”

  • Gonzalo Mateo-Guerrero, Navantia’s Director of Operations and Business, highlighted the program’s importance at the industrial, strategic, commercial, and defense levels.

  • AJEMA reiterated the value of the submarine as “the ultimate deterrent,” essential for control of the seas.

  • More than 6,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs.

  • Annual contribution to Spain’s GDP of over €250 million, of which €80 million corresponds to the Region of Murcia
